Biliana Voutchkova's ongoing project advocating listening and the arts as a meaningful way in which people and places can connect
Shared Space is a variable interdisciplinary event conceived by Biliana Voutchkova. It brings together a mixed group of artists for the co-creation of installations, performances, and collaborative actions. Artists gather prior to each event to prepare work connecting to
the specifics of the space, environment, and socio-political circumstances, developing material and structure through experimentation, followed by public presentation of an installation and live interventions. The process emphasises attentive listening and collective resonance, merging individual expression into a collective sonic space.
Rooted in the traditions of Berlin's Echtzeitmusik (real-time music), Shared Space explores thresholds between sound, silence, word, meaning, and non-meaning, focusing on non-verbal communication through embodied presence, gesture, voice, instruments, and collective listening. Responding to the specifics of each location, it becomes a unified entity combining audio, visuals, field recordings, fabrics, and found natural materials, interwoven with compositions transmitted through mini-speakers and open live interactions. It can be presented in- or outdoors, inviting audiences into direct, embodied experience that expands performance into a shared act of listening and exchange.
The project's objective is to open space for multidirectional connectivity between performers, installation, and audience, while building
a working bridge between artistic communities worldwide.
Shared Space was first concepted as Shared Space of the Liberated Sound, shown over three consecutive days in September 2023 at the White Cube Gallery of Toplocentrala Sofia, supported by the Goethe-Institut Bulgaria and the Polish Institut Sofia.

Shared Space II is concluding the collaboration between Biliana and Elsa during Elsa’s residency at Roam Projects Berlin, bringing together guest artists for live interventions alongside the newly created installation. The installation is shaped by Mencagli’s ceramics, fabrics, and found natural materials, interwoven with Voutchkova’s sound compositions played through mini-speakers, based on pre-recorded sound environments and collected lullabies sung on location in Bulgaria by close friends of the artist. Live musical spatial interventions in shifting constellations respond to the installation, which functions as both score and habitat.

Screened videos, sculptures made from natural materials collected in Bulgaria and small mechanical motors, wall applications and written texts alongside an aural multichannel composition played through a set of discreet small speakers. Live musical spatial interventions in shifting constellations respond to the installation, which functions as both score and habitat.
